Education

The Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne continues to take enrolments for the Diploma of Manufacturing Technology (Structural Steel Detailing stream) which commenced on the 12th July, 2010. Classes at Swinburne next year will include evening classes and some online learning material to suit the needs of those people working in industry.

The Central Institute of Technology in Perth has also stepped up to meet the challenge of supplying Diploma trained students in this area of Structural Design Drafting and Structural Steel Detailing. Their diploma is delivered over a 15 week period in a full time engineering/drafting simulated office environment. They are also considering running the course part time over 2 semesters or 30 weeks.

After discussions with Ian Black of Swinburne University and Sam Prescott of The Central Institute, we can advise that these courses are currently only available to students attending the respective Colleges. There are hopes that Swinburne University will collaborate with the Central Institute of Technology in Perth to prepare and offer this course nationally with an on-line delivery option to trainees living outside of Perth & Melbourne.

Those with industry experience will be keen to learn of the opportunities that exist for recognition of their skills and may find that they would not be required to attend classes for the first semester of basic and generic skills, but could work on submitting a portfolio of evidence for recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment this year and join the classes for the specific skills and knowledge around structural steel detailing which commence in February 2011.

Interest in this course has been generated through the AISD and we have received calls from all around the country and even from overseas as there are very few courses available in this field around the world.

In the mean time, if you are interested in learning more about this new and exciting career and training opportunity, please contact;
